Walk this way: Hallway tips

Hallways are some of the most overlooked - but regularly used - areas of any home. Despite this, it’s not unusual for it to be overlooked in favour of other living areas.

But as a common entrance point, a hallway sets the tone for the rest of your home - both for you and your guests and visitors.

Here is my key advice to anyone wanting their hallways to make the right impression.

My top three tips

Use light and neutral colours
Light colors help create an illusion of space and make a hallway feel brighter. If you want to make an impact and choose a darker colour - paint the ceiling and skirting in the same darker paint colour and add a mirror - by painting the ceiling in the same colour it will make the ceiling feel higher

Get the lighting right
Using the right light fixtures on the ceiling is important and also making sure the light is more white than yellow - Ide suggest staying away from wall lighting such as scones unless the light is back lighting a mirror.

Use mirrors
Using Mirrors to give the illusion of a bigger space and bounces light around. Personally, I love an oversized mirror in a small hallway - dramatic, impactful as well as these benefits

Two to steer clear of

Dark runners or flooring
Opt for lighter coloured flooring or tiles/runners to avoid darkening the space unnecessarily.

Filling the space
Keep the space simple. If this is where shoes and coats live, try not to place too much in the same space such as console tables or chairs.
