The reality of embarking on a big project

Undertaking a large-scale interior design project can be a hugely rewarding experience, but it’s also a significant commitment in more ways than one.

Whether it’s a whole-home refurbishment, a major reconfiguration, or a complete change of aesthetic, these projects ask for time, clarity, and careful coordination. While the challenge of realising your vision for a space or home might seem a romantic journey, time and again our clients tell us how helpful it was to have us on hand as a supportive guide to help them navigate the project.

I’m often asked by clients what the process actually looks like, so I thought I’d share a brief outline of the key stages involved. If nothing else, understanding them early can make the whole journey far smoother and far less stressful.

1. Defining the brief
Every successful project begins with a clear, honest conversation - and exploration of how you live, what matters to you, and what you want your space to achieve. This isn’t about trends; it’s about understanding your needs, your routines, and your long-term vision.

2. Surveying and concept development
From site visits and detailed measurements to moodboards and initial scheme ideas, this is where the project starts to take shape. It’s a collaborative stage - refining ideas, exploring possibilities, and ensuring the concept truly suits you and your home.

3. Design development and specification
Once the direction is agreed, it’s time to build out the detail. Furniture layouts, lighting plans, materials, fabrics, joinery, window treatments, finishes - every element is considered, specified, and costed. This stage often involves liaising with architects, structural teams, and specialist makers.

4. Procurement and scheduling
Large-scale projects involve many moving parts. Lead times, bespoke items, contractor coordination, and logistics all need careful handling. It’s not a pre-requisite, but from experience, having someone manage this on your behalf keeps the project on track and protects you from unnecessary overwhelm.

5. Implementation and installation
This is where the vision becomes reality. Contractors are on site, deliveries begin, and the space starts to transform. Regular oversight is key - checking workmanship, resolving issues promptly, and ensuring every detail aligns with the agreed design. Of course, things don’t always go to plan, so keeping a cool head while all around you closely resembles mayhem is crucial!

6. Styling and handover
The final stage brings everything together. Furniture is positioned, curtains are dressed, artwork is hung, cushions plumped, and the layers that make a house feel like a home are added. Only then is the project truly complete, and everyone involved can take a step back and admire what they’ve been able to achieve.

When managed well, a project of any size should feel considered, structured, and even enjoyable. The flip-side often doesn’t bear contemplating!
