Simple ways to brighten winter days
As the days grow shorter and the light fades earlier, I’m always reminded how much our surroundings influence how we feel.
The long nights of a British winter can be challenging - especially when more of our time is spent indoors - but small, thoughtful changes can make a real difference.
Here are some simple ways for you to brighten those long winter days and nights:
Lighting is key. I like to think of it in layers rather than relying on a single overhead source. A mix of table and floor lamps, along with wall lights or small rechargeable lamps, helps to create warmth and depth, a soft glow rather than a stark brightness.
Colour and texture matter too. Introducing lighter shades on walls or accessories helps maximise the natural daylight we do get, while richer fabrics - wool throws, velvet cushions, or a deep rug underfoot - add comfort and a sense of cocooning.
Get reflective. Adding a well-placed mirror can make a surprising difference to a room. Positioned opposite or beside a window, it reflects light deeper into the room and helps open up darker corners without the need for extra lighting.
Winter will always ask us to slow down, but with a few simple adjustments, it can still feel like a season full of light and energy.
