Making a house a home

I often talk about different techniques, approaches and styles you can use to update, change or elevate your interiors. But I believe the secret to great interior design is taking the theoretical side of the practice and using it as the foundation on which to build something special.

This is especially true when it comes to our homes; it isn’t just about how something looks, it’s about how it makes you feel.

It doesn’t have to be a big statement, or something grand, and it’s not about showing off (although that’s also fine if you want to). For me, it’s about giving your living space a truly personal touch to imbue your home with the essence of who you are. These flourishes, items or ideas that are original or unique help express your personality and create a living environment that reflects you and your life.

Not sure where you might start? Here are my three top tips to get you started:

Showcase your collections
Whether it’s books, art, souvenirs or something more unusual, if you have a collection you’ve assembled over time, don’t hide it away. Arranging a collection of similar items can create a point of visual interest that’s storied and authentically you.

Celebrate the sentimental
Heirlooms, gifts and other items of sentimental value might not be a seamless fit, but they say a lot about the person who owns them. If you blend them into your interior as part of a wider style, they’ll more than make up for it with new layers of emotional depth to your decor.

Create and customise
You don’t have to be a craftsperson to explore your creativity with furniture, fabrics or fittings. Even adding small tweaks, like replacing drawer or doorknobs with distinctive handles can inject personality and playfulness into your home. And if you are confident enough, including something you’ve painted or made yourself is one of the best ways to make a home your own.

Designing the interior of your living spaces should be a personal experience. If you need someone to walk alongside you to share new ways to bring a little more you into your home, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
