Getting creative with cushions
While a full-scale revamp is always a sure-fire way of introducing a new look for any room, my Head of Interior Design, Matt and I are often asked for ways to inject a new mood or look without going for a total overhaul.
Whenever we get this question, our answer is always the same. Scatter cushions are hands-down the quickest way to refresh, inject personality or complete your decorating scheme without a full redesign.
So for anyone looking to introduce a new look, perfect an existing one, and whether updating a sofa, bed or just an occasional chair, here are Matt’s five top tips for selecting and styling with cushions:
1. Mix textures, not just patterns
A combination of textures adds depth and keeps your cushions looking considered rather than chaotic! Experiment mixing velvet with linen or boucle with silk, or for another example, our Beaminster natural textured cushion would coordinate perfectly with the Sherborne bronze silk cushion.
2. Mix shapes and sizes
Adding different sizes and shapes - even oversized floor cushions - will give you added depth and an effortlessly layered look. Sticking to odd numbers of cushions will also give you a more natural, curated feel rather than regimented staged look. This approach works especially well on sofas or large beds.
3. Identify your anchor
One bold print cushion (like our Wimborne geometric luxury velvet cushion) can act as an anchor, with the rest of your selection supporting the look. This is also a great way of adding large or bold prints into your room for those who are nervous or less confident about making a statement.
