The great room reshuffle

I’m often asked about the best way to reinvigorate a room or interior without a big budget. The reality is, there is no single answer that applies to every situation. However, one tried-and-tested approach I advise time and again is simply to reshuffle and rearrange what people already have in place.

It may seem like I’m stating the obvious, but people are so often surprised by just how much a refreshed layout can transform your space, making it feel more open, inviting, and functional - almost like you’ve moved into a new home without the hassle!

With that said, a room reshuffle can easily tip into stressful endeavour, so here are six tips to help you experiment with different ideas and layouts to maximise your space:

  1. Start with a focal point: Whether it’s a fireplace, large window, or piece of artwork, arrange your furniture to draw attention to the room’s focal point.

  2. Consider flow: Ensure there's a clear path for moving around the room. Aim for open walkways and avoid blocking access with bulky furniture.

  3. Play with angles: Not everything has to be against a wall! Try angling your sofa or armchair to create interesting dynamics and define areas in larger rooms.

  4. Think multi-functional: Move lighter furniture like side tables or ottomans around to experiment with different configurations and functions.

  5. Less is more: Don’t be afraid to remove pieces to create a cleaner, more spacious feel. As I talked about in a recent newsletter, decluttering can enhance the openness of your space.

  6. Use rugs to anchor: A well-placed rug can tie your furniture arrangement together, defining a cozy seating area in an open layout.
