A room in full bloom

For me, the word ‘floral’ in home decorating will always conjure childhood memories of visiting grandparents; floral sofas, curtains and wallpaper galore.

I’m not alone, either, so it’s no surprise that the thought of introducing florals into a modern space can spark hesitation, or even fear!

However, floral prints are undoubtedly timeless and classic. When used thoughtfully, rather than something to shy away from they can bring warmth, charm and personality to any interior.

Despite their fussy reputation, florals offer endless opportunities for creativity and expression and speak to the core of what interior design is all about.

Embracing flower power

If you are new to florals, start small. Adding a cushion, lampshade or even a framed botanical print is a gentle way to dip your toe into the look. Once you begin to gain confidence, you can begin layering florals in different sizes, colours and textured fabric for a more relaxed, lived-in feel.

Personally, I love mixing small whimsical ditsy prints with bold, large-scale floral blooms. Bring in different fabric textures, plush velvets, linens and even chintz to bring in that nostalgic, eclectic charm. It’s all in the mix; creating depth and interest giving your space that ‘thrown together’ appeal.

For the bold decorators among you, a statement floral sofa or armchair against a neutral decorating scheme can transform a room and become a real conversation starter...in a good way!

And for those seeking the ultimate floral fantasy, a fully wallpapered room or ceiling, using de Gournay's exquisite hand painted and hand-embroidered wall covering, on Indian Tea Paper, silk or even gold leaf will elevate your interior into a realm of luxury dreams.

Florals are not just for the past, they are a vibrant, versatile part of the present.
